Had a problem with th7 not recognizing gps input. I got the guts and
disassembled my 10 day old radio. As I thought, it was in the GPS input
jack. There was a broken what appears to be resistor that goes from the
ground sleeve on the connector to ground on the circuit board. The shield
was completely disconnected from the radio. Does anyone have a schematic
and could tell me what the value of the resistor is supposed to be. I
guess it is about .5 ohm. The one that was in there was completely bent up
and broken-strange how it passed their QC tests. Mike WA8EBM

Hello All,
Any UK Hams out there using either PocketAPRS or APRSce if so where did
you get the maps from or is there anyone that has made their own? (How
?)
Any pro's & con's ref Palm IIIx vs. CE devices ? I use a Psion 3c 2mb at
the moment and have all but given up on it, the cost of progress I
suppose :(
Any info at all would be most welcome !

73 de Steve G7EXZ (TH-D7E Mk2)

PS.
Bob, Have Kenwood started work on the D7's future replacement ? yes I
think it's a GREAT Rig but I'd like to be able to trickle charge & use
it at the same time, the only other improvement I would like to see is a
"feature connector" on the bottom (ala mobile phones) to combine
Antenna/Power/Data/GPS/Ext.Speaker this would enable us to "roll our
own" accessories for Mobile or Base use (remember that cool Mobile
Pwr/Charger for the Yaesu FT51r ?) AND connect to an external antenna
without messing around with SMA connectors - yuck
Any suggestions from other users perhaps we could pass on our "wish
list" to Kenwood !

DB-9 pinout is the same as the pinout on the Garmin GPS 35 PC DB-9

If you are talking about the MCP program, You can get it off Kenwoods FTP
server (ftp.kenwood.net) you need to go down the software directory instead
of the amateur directory. It seems to work ok. On the plus side outside of
a few minor things, you can use it to read in the D7 config and use it as a
basis for D700 config. It made it much easier put the repeater freq into
it, since I didn't have to retype them in.

Check out the new D-700S model on Kenwood's Japan sight---it has built in
GPS! Now I know why I couldn't figure out what that extra Molex connector
was for (the one in addition to the voice synthesizer module plug). As best
I can read Japanese, the optional GPS plug in module lists for
$140---smells like a street price of $100--not bad!

Well after looking at the sight, Congrats on figuring it out.

The only thing I could figure was the optional TGP-10 which using the
currency calculator I used works out to $366. US! Hope that's not right.

Has anyone made a GPS passive repeater to bring GPS signals into a
building? Our aluminum shingles keep GPS out of the garage. I'd like to
put an antenna on the roof cabled to a radiator inside, to keep the GPSes
locked on while the cars are in the garage.

Oh, and I'm looking for recommendations for a no-display GPS engine that
will run on 12 vdc, accept an external antenna and squirt out NMEA
sentences suitable for the D700. I want to stick a D700 in my wife's new
4Runner, and use a combo hockey puck cell/GPS antenna on the roof for
those 2 functions. (She's already missing her TM-733 and cell phone, and
she's gonna let me drill the roof for the 2 antennas we need. Oh boy!)

Keep in mind that just because it is available in Japan by no means implies
that it will also be available in the US! Also, who knows if the 700S
requires an entirely new radio (GPS antenna port,etc.). I wouldn't change
my buying plans based on their Japanese version. Sure is interseting,
though!

The Garmin GPS 35 PC is great! The Garmin supplied DB-9 terminated cable
plugs into the Kenwood PG-4W cable for true plug and play connection to the
D700 via the PG-4W cable's 2.5mm stereo plug termination.

If you go the other route, check with Radiall/Larsen as they have an
integrated cellular/GPS antenna all in one. However, don't forget that this
will not work with a dual band phone (850 MHz cellular and 1900 MHz PCS).

>Has anyone made a GPS passive repeater to bring GPS signals into a
>building? Our aluminum shingles keep GPS out of the garage.

I have seen such used in an office/lab setting, and at a trade show in a
hotel conference room setting.

An antenna was simply put on the roof, cabled to an amplifier with about
100' of coax, and retransmitted inside through a pattive antenna.

I have heard that a direct antenna to antenna connection with an extremely
short run (ie: inches) _may_ work, esp with an amplified antenna on the
outside and a passive antenna on the inside.

I have not set up such a thing though, so I can't be real specific.

>Oh, and I'm looking for recommendations for a no-display GPS engine that

I like the GPS 35 as well. The GPS engine and antenna are all in a unit
about the size of a small mouse case. I ordered the GPS35-HVS model
(010-00153-03) which as RS232 level outputs and runs on a wide range of
power. Online manuals are available at the Garmin site. Depending on how
you want to attach it to the roof, you can simply run screws through the
roof into the unit, or buy something like the magnetic mount accessory.

Of course that will not help with the cell phone antenna.

Oh yea,

The manual is online at

    http://www.garmin.com/manuals/spec35.pdf

This unit can do alot of stuff that I don't need (like RTCM DGPS support,
unit status, and phased data output) but it's there if I ever want to try
using it.

Pages 8 through 13 show mounting options and the wiring diagram.

Don't be distracted with the Evaulation Kit stuff. Unless you are trying to
develop a system that requires actively interfacing with the unit, it's
unnecessary overkill.

Most of the non-display GPS's I have seen seem to cost more than the cheaper
mass manufactured "with display" models. However, the best non display model
I have seen is the pharos gps. It is about 2" x 2" and last I heard cost
about $125. You will have to step down your cars 12 volt source to 5 volts,
but that is easy.

http://www.pharosgps.com/product/igps180.pdf

Another interesting device is the Handspring Spring Board module from
Geodiscovery. This GPS device plugs into a Handspring Palm PDA and provides
mapping software as well as the integrated GPS device. It is supposed to
retail for about $250 (thats the SpringBoard Geodiscovery GPS module only).
Check out http://www.geodiscovery.com/GeoFlyerV2.pdf for more info on this
not yet deliverable item, or www.handspring.com . My Handspring 8meg Palm is
on its way from Handspring ($249) ...... I can't wait to use it with
PocketAPRS : )

The docs refer to two serial ports on this device, but the wiring diagrams
seem to indicate that it's only useful for hooking up a differential unit to
the GPS 35. I don't suppose it can do NMEA on both....?

Here you go, cuz:

http://www.navtechgps.com/supply/rerad.asp

I wonder if you could just use an active antenna supplied with 5v to the amp
and put up a 1/4 wave re-radiator inside. I'll bet that would work.

To answer my own question, I found the problem. The plug supploed by Kenwood has bad leads and should not be used. My cable GPS Tx and Rx lines now both work since I replaced the plug. It was simple. I bought a replacement gold plated soldertail plug from Radio Shack, cost less than two bucks.
This one opens up and allows you to solder the line leads to internal gold plated soldertails, then seal up the plug. The whole thing works great!
I only found out my posit was not going out from my D7 when I checked my Position using the POS button. I would watch my position reading change as I was driving sometimes. A couple of weeks ago I noticed my position was all zeros on the D7 POS display, but waypoint data continued to update on my GPS III+ screen as usual.
Many others may be in the same condition with the clunky plugs. I see at least four units regularly coming up on the digi network here in NJ as position JJ.OO.AA. Press that POS button folks and find out if you are beaconing zero posits.

As far as I can tell, 39,800 yen converts to $555.196 cdn, which is
close to $100. USD!!

I did my conversions from:

In my opinion, I feel that the evaluation kit is well worth it.

You get all 4 mounting hardware units (complete with all hardware) which
more than pays for the cost of the kit. In addition, you get the software
that is necessary to program it. Any change(s) you may want to
(eventually)make, such as selecting 9600 baud versus 4800, will require
this software. And, since I wasn't sure which hardware mount I wanted to
use, this alone paid for the kit, and now I have the programming kit.

My 2 cents...

Larry Zanella

Good evening,

I want to use my VC-H1 in a mobile setting without burning through AA
batteries. Unfortunately, it runs on 6v and everything I can find will
convert 12v to 5v, not 6v. Rather annoying.

Can anyone point me to a good source for a 12v to 6v converter to use with
the VC-H1? Failing that, a good circuit to build to do this? I'd prefer
something pre-built, due to my less than wonderful construction skills.

Thanks very much.

-David

The Rand McNalley gps with StreetFinder 2000 works very well, and will take anywhere from 5 to 16 volts. Not weather proof so it's only good for your personal car use on your dash or rear deck. You can get them for $79 at your nearest RandMcNalley store or direct from them.

The docs refer to two serial ports on this device, but the wiring diagrams
seem to indicate that it's only useful for hooking up a differential unit to
the GPS 35. I don't suppose it can do NMEA on both....?

It looks like my best bet is to either use one of my existing GPSes,
probably the Garmin GPS II+, or buy a cheapo new display model. It's
counter-intuitive to me that there isn't a no-display model with an
external antenna jack that's less expensive than a more capable one, but
that ignores market pressure. I'll just stick it in the cubby hole with
the D700, wire it into the battery, and forget that it has a display on
it.

I looked at Garmin 35s, but they don't accept external antennas, and
minimizing external penetrations is important in this case. I need 2m/440,
cell and GPS. I can do it with 2 holes with 2 combination antennas,
cell/GPS, and 2m/440.

Thanks to all for their advice. I appreciate it, and it confirms what I
was already concluding.

Chris,

If you're interested in making a small project out of it, I have the
perfect solution for you. You can do what I did in my D700 installation.
I basically gutted a Rand McNally unit for the GPS engine, installed it
in a plastic case about the size of a pack of cigarettes, and put
appropriate connectors and switches for power, antenna, and data on the
box. Plug in the power, antenna and connect to the D700 and away you go.

If you're interested in the details, let me know.

If the GPS unit is inside the radio, it would either need an external
antenna, or the chassis would need a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. I
see no advantage to the configuration. There may be an advantage in putting
a GPS sensor inside a D7, however.

There is less wiring and interfacing hassle. Also, if Kenwood has an
integrated antenna, then it would be a snap! For instance, my Mercedes has
a factory installed dual band cellular/PCS antenna (850 and 1900 MHz!) plus
a GPS antenna, all 3 integrated into a single, multiband antenna system,
with one coax run to the front panel 6" TFT display master conntrol system.
The MCS includes a preamp, splitter and +5V bias supply 9for the GPS) all
integrated.

I would think if Kenwood comes out with a GPS inside the radio chassis it
would only be logical to come out with an antenna covering 2m/440 and GPS,
all in one, with one coax run and one hole/mounting spot on the roof. Keep
in mind that what Mercedes includes in my car is at least as complex as
what I am talking about here. And, we all know that the Japanese are second
to none when a technical challenge is laid down. In my opinion, it will
depend on whether we are willing to pay some $bucks for this, or not.

I still don't see the advantage. You still need to connect an antenna! So
whats the advantage of connecting an antenna vs connecting a GPS? For one
thing you loose the ability to view all stations in a graphic display (the
gps display), as well as the ability to view where the heck you are. The GPS
gives me a heck of a lot of info on that little screen. Time, elevation,
average speed, estimated destination time, distance from all waypoints, can
also have alarms as you near waypoints/other stations, plus a ton of other
features.

As far as the antennas are concerned, perhaps you would look less like a
porcupine, but the gps antenna is fairly unobtrusive. And it sounds like two
antennas (one for 2m/440 and one GPS) will be a heck of a lot cheaper than a
preamp, splitter, and multiband antenna. However, if I owned a Mercedes I
think I would be reluctant to drill a single hole in my roof, so it better
come with a 2m/440/GPS/FM/AM/cell/PCS antenna.

Just my thoughts

Walter

I would think if Kenwood comes out with a GPS inside the radio chassis it
would only be logical to come out with an antenna covering 2m/440 and GPS,
all in one, with one coax run and one hole/mounting spot on the roof. Keep
in mind that what Mercedes includes in my car is at least as complex as
what I am talking about here. And, we all know that the Japanese are second
to none when a technical challenge is laid down. In my opinion, it will
depend on whether we are willing to pay some $bucks for this, or not.

That's potentially true except for one little complication - protecting the
GPS preamp from the 50W of 2M RF or the 35W of 440 RF. Excellent harmonic
suppression of the transmitters would also be a must, to keep from
overloading the front end of the GPS (now sharing the same coax) as 11th
harmonics of 2 meters are close if not within the pass band of the GPS.
This is one of the things some of us would like to solve for trackers
designed for SAR, to essentially be able to put the GPS antenna on top of
the 2M antenna, so both might be enclosed in PVC tubing and strapped to
searchers' pack frames. It will be interesting to see if someone rises to
the challenge.

Well, fortunately for you I have this Kenwood part number in my notes:
W01-0921-05. This is a cigarette lighter adapter for the Kenwood CD
players requiring 6vdc. This will fit and work for the VC-H1 units. The
Kenwood parts distributor should quote: $28.38 + shipping.

To all on the list,

Just to set the record straight and not let this rumor get out of
hand. Kenwood USA decided not to make the optional GPS available to the
general (US) market. There are so many full featured GPS units available
and is difficult to compete. Kenwood felt that most US operators would opt
for one of the available GPS units rather than to buy a Kenwood GPS. NO
New versions of the TM-D700A units will be introduced other than what is
available now.

I received a flyer the other from Antenex. Antenex has come out with an
integrated GPS/NMO mount. It has two coax runs coming from it. It allows
putting any NMO type antenna along with the GPS. I checked their webpage
(www.antenex.com), but I did not see it.

They also have an NMO GPS antenna if you already have an NMO that you want
to add the GPS.

Without getting into the pros and cons of the marketing decision; I
think it is GREAT that Kenwood is monitoring this list and is providing
feedback! I wish some of the other manufacturers would follow suit
(along with the Manual/Service bulletin FTP site, etc.) The others may
lurk, but these are the only guys I've seen uncloak. FULL DISCLOSURE
STATEMENT: All of my new gear has been of another manufacturer, with
some used equipment from Kenwood, at least up until now as I'm getting
more and more into APRS....

For about the same price I have installed a Pharos GPS to feed my D700. I
have it mounted on the passenger side near the "A" post
http://www.steffeninc.com/d71.jpg . The D700 is mounted on the floor with
the display on the dash http://www.steffeninc.com/d72.jpg .

I was very impressed with the Pharos unit. It is about 1-1/2" square. The
first time I plugged it in I had a position lock in less than 30 seconds.
Don't know how it did that unless they pre-loaded the almanac during
manufacturing.

My only complaint is that I am unable to read the D700 display in normal
sunlight. If it is cloudy, dusk or dark it is great but a normal sunny
day....forget it.

I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed with Kenwood on how they
handled the upgrade to D7G. When I was at Dayton I was told by a Kenwood
person in their booth that I should subscribe to the Kenwood e-mail system
at their web page. I was told to do that to be able to get the information
of the upgrade. The Kenwood sales guy told me not to send the unit in until
the upgrade was announced via e-mail, not to believe what I was seeing on
the APRS SIG about the upgrade since Kenwood would release the only
official upgrade information.

Thank goodness I do subscribe to the APRSSIG! Kenwood has never sent any
information (at least that I received and I did confirm that I am on the
e-mail list). When I read on the SIG how people were sending their units
in for upgrade I chuckled to myself that it would take weeks to get their
unit back since the official release was never sent out. Imagine my
surprise when people on the SIG starting talking about receiving their
units back after only 1-2 day turn time! Well, I figured I should send
mine in and get some of this great service, even though there still was no
notification via e-mail that the upgrade was officially release.

Just so show you no good deal goes unpunished, Kenwood East Coast received
my D7A for upgrade on June 21st. When I called today they had not started
working on it yet but thought they might get to it today. Wonder what
happened to that 2-3 day turnaround.

Dave

I had the pleasure of being at the right place at the right time this 4th
July, as one of my friends' brother-in-law said "The next thing I need to
look into, is APRS for my sailplane". This man had his own reasons for
being interested in APRS as he was one of the "fathers" of the GPS
satellites having been one of the senior members of the design team for
the clocks that go inside them!

I was able to show him APRS in action using the Kenwood TH-D7A(G) and the
TM-D700A, and now he's all fired up about setting up a tracker box in his
15m Standard Class sailplane. While he is electronically minded, I'm
hoping that he'll invite me along to do the radio tests. Ok, Ok, I just
want to go up in the sail plane! I admit it!

So, anyone out there go aeronautical mobile with an APRS tracker? What
equipment do you use? How successful have you been? Did you discover any
previously unforseen problems? Got any useful tips?

Julian, N3JF

Without getting into the pros and cons of the marketing decision; I
think it is GREAT that Kenwood is monitoring this list and is providing
feedback! I wish some of the other manufacturers would follow suit
(along with the Manual/Service bulletin FTP site, etc.) The others may
lurk, but these are the only guys I've seen uncloak. FULL DISCLOSURE
STATEMENT: All of my new gear has been of another manufacturer, with
some used equipment from Kenwood, at least up until now as I'm getting
more and more into APRS....

Hi Julian,

I did about the same thing. A friend invited me up one
day in a Cessna 172 rented plane and I took the D7A and
a Tripmate.. What a blast! When I got home the track
was very cool and precisely laid out... I experienced
no lockups, had no difficulties beaconing at the 1
minute interval.. I forget what path I used, but around
the Chicagoland area I hope I used only WIDE, for at
1500 feet who needs RELAY hi...

lists that are for their products and they don't just lurk.

I am thinking about modifying a Garmin cigarette lighter adapter power cable to branch off to a GPS III plus as well. Rather than cut it up to find out, can anyone tell me if the Tx and Rx wires are in that cable lying unused, or does it just have 2 out of the 4 wires, Power and Ground?

won't work. You need the power/data cable they also make.

I have a couple of systems here exhibiting very odd behaviour.

ETE-3 is definitely working well. Except that ETE-5 can't connect to it.
ETE-3 also dosen't digi ETE-5's packets.
You'd think ETE-3 was deaf, except that it is digiing other packets just fine.

ETE-3 and ETE-5 both seem to intermittently respond to ETE-9's packets,
yet ETE-5 copies 9 just fine, even when 9's path does not include any digi.

What could be causing these systems to ignore each other?
I don't think it's an RF or audio problem.

(Way too many debugging projects on the fire at the moment.)

Has anyone looked at the circuit diagram?

It strikes me that running off 6v is non standard and that maybe the
designers were clever enough to have put a voltage regulator on the power
input of the VC-1.

Or use a belt-pack of 4 D cells that will last 10 times longer for only
twice the price...

Funny you should bring this up.....

I am actually in the process of installing a TH-D7A on my ultralight
aircraft (a powered parachute). The issue at the moment is weight and
space. To have both aircraft band and APRS/Ham, I will need two radios.
This just plain takes up more space than I would like. I already have a GPS
and an intercom system on a ram mount, so I have some of the system
completed. Once I get it all working, I will have to take a few pictures
and post them on my web site.

APRS would provide some GREAT advantages for me in flying. I plan on
mounting a weather station on a portable setup. Then wherever I fly, I can
get the wind direction and speed EXACTLY. Wind direction is extremely
important with PPCs for landing and take off. Of course I will still have a
traditional windsock as well.

I hope to get this all setup in a month or so. I am currently looking at
the two wire wx stations that are only $79. Seems perfect for the task. As
far as I know, this may be the first 'permanent' installation on this type
of aircraft...

I have been having problems with my new G firmware in the D7. If my GPS is
sync'd (I leave it connected to 12V in the car most of the time), and I
change the D7 GPS usage from "NOT USED" to "NMEA", before I plug in the GPS,
it will never display anything by zeros and blinking dots. If I power cycle
the radio, it will start showing the current GPS data when POS is pressed.

This similar to the problems I have been having in not getting the G model
to recognize my GPS III+.
I can't believe no one else complains of this!
Someone sent me a message to start the GPS BEFORE turning on the radio and
it seemed to do the trick- but I believe the radio firmware does have a bug
in this regard.

Ralph,

I don't have the problem you mention. If I've set gps to nmea, it doesn't
matter whether I turn on the D7 first, or the GIII+ first.

The problem described in the snip below may have to do with plugging in the
gps while the d7 is powered up. Manual warns against plugging anything in
without powering down. I had strange problems related to that early on with
my d7. Bet that when you "power the gps before turning the radio on",
you're already plugged in and thus powering up the d7 after the plug is
inserted.

You have to be very agressive in manual beaconing when the signal strength
reaches 3 bars on the S-Meter.

Where can I find the RM GPS for $60? I've only seen them for $79.

Also, is there a web page with recommendations for inexpensive
trackers parts, ie < $150 5W HTs, <$100 GPS, etc?

My local club wants to put together about 10 trackers for club
functions.

Thanks,

I just joined this sig so if I am resurfacing old questions that have =
been previously discussed, please bear with me. Everything I know =
about APRS has been gleaned from reading WA1LOUs two books on the =
subject.=20

I have noticed that my THD7A does not seem to have much punch for keying =
voice repeaters or APRS digis. I've tried the stock antenna and also =
have a Comet SMA 503 which may be a tad better. The stock antenna and =
radio have been checked by Kenwood with no problems found. However, =
doing a very rough comparison with a crude signal strengh meter and =
comparing signal reports with other HTs there is a big difference. With =
an external antenna coupled through a SMA-BNC things work reasonably =
fine. Is this normal for this radio?

What are the current recommendations for a GPS?

Any recommendations for a mobile installation with the THD7?

Does anyone have any neat ideas to integrate APRS and ham radio into a =
high school physics class? I'm starting a second career, after 25 years =
in engineering.
If I can stimulate some interest, I'm all for it.

Thanks,
Dave WB2UTQ

Dave,

I called Kenwood East last week before sending my D7A to see how
long to expect the repair loop to take. The very nice lady on the phone
put me on hold and checked with the technician. Instead of giving me
a rough estimate, she told me on Thursday, 29-JUN-00, that the
technician was presently working on radio's received from 13-JUN-00.
So, that was about 12 working days at the time. On 06-JUL-00, I
received an e-mail that they received the unit, gave me a tracking
number, and stated that the UPS computer would notify me by e-mail
when it ships.

With all of that information, I will look for my unit to arrive sometime
after 27-JUL-00 giving it about 3 days to ship.

They were obviously doing quite a few upgrades when I called a few
weeks ago.

Having worked in the service industry, it was always difficult to predict
how long the cycle would take in repairing or upgrading equipment,
because you never knew how fast you would get flooded with work at
any given time. They got flooded with D7A's to be upgraded.

I am extremely satisfied how up-front and informative they were with
me when I called Kenwood East prior to sending my unit. I did not
expect the e-mail telling me they received it nor that UPS would
notify me by e-mail when it ships. I was impressed!

Now I will patiently wait and finish my D700 GPS project with the
unit I got from CommSurplus that is working great. More on that
later...

Don't think it will do NMEA on both, but why not just use a splitter cable
to send the serial output to two devices? A "dumb" unit like a D7 or D700
does not need to talk to the GPS. Unless you are trying to display other
stations on the GPS (which a non-display GPS can't do anyhow) what is the
point in trying to send anything to the GPS engine?

In a setup where the computer/palmpilot/terminal device may talk to the GPS
still should not prevent you from picking up just the GPS output and sending
it to a second device.

Did not know that the "various mounting brackets" were a complete set of
mounting kits. When I was talking to Garmin about accessories (like mounting
kits, software packages, etc) they did not indicate, for whatever reason,
that all of the mounting kits were included with the software package. Good
to know though.

While the software may still be very useful, the unit as shipped from the
factory has worked as-is out of the box with both my laptop and KPC3+ based
tracker, so having this program is not necessarily critical (or required) to
using the unit.

Per http://www.qsl.net/n6qab/n6qabgps.htm it seems the GPS 35 may have
problems with the Kenwood units. I'll have to run some more tests, as I
usually use a Garmin GPSIII with my D7.

Darrell

G'Day All
I have just gotten into this APRS thing. I have a KPC-3 with version 8 =
firmware and a Garmin GPS-35, I run a Toshiba 486 SX 25 laptop.

1st - I believe there is a file that will allow me to run WinAPRS even =
though I have windows 3.11 - can someone let me know the name of the =
file...???

2nd - As a beginner can someone give me a list of settings to start with =
for either Ui View or APRS, I have not decide which one to run with yet.

Cheers from Rob
